Wire Frame & Antique Advertising Mirror in Master Bedroom

I
n the last post, I mentioned that I had won a giveaway from Layla@The Lettered Cottage. My super fabulous prizes include the bag, wire frame, and stone candle holders at the left. Today's posts features that wire frame and one of the junking finds I showed you a few posts ago...an antique gesso advertising mirror. They have come together into a vignette in the newly renovated master bedroom (I still cringe at the before photos!!).

You can see that I've changed the white bedding out for some green and ivory for the winter months. it adds a bit of warmth to the room. With that change, the antique gesso advertising mirror seemed like it found a home above the desk. It replaced the shell mirror that was previously there.

Here is the morning sun as it says hello...

I love catching the sun flare in my photos...

Here is that fabulous wire frame that Layla sent me. It is the perfect place to feature the artistic endeavors of a favorite princess of mine. I love the pop of color! The wool bunnies...one from Home Goods, the other from TJMaxx...are actually (Are you ready for this?)...dog toys. Ha! Yes, it's true! I absolutely adore them.

I love the texture and patina of the frame on this mirror. Even the mirror itself has so much character! The soft blue of the hydrangeas seems to work well in the vignette.

The lamp is another TJMaxx find from years ago. The lampshade is a recent purchase...from Target.

A view from the master bath...

Schoolhouse Light

R
eady for another simple light change? You saw how the star light in the photo above transformed my kitchen by changing out the builder's brass fixture. Well,...see that other light above? The one that looks like it belongs in an old schoolhouse? I found it the same day as the star light and the other items you see there. Where was that? The outstanding occasional sale at Second Hand Rose in Buffalo, MN.

MOVE THAT MOUSE...
For the next photo, move your mouse over the image to see the before and after!
(NOTE: If you are viewing this in a reader, you'll have to visit the post to view the effect.)

From grim to prim in 5 minutes. So much better, right? This is in the master bath...one of two rooms in the house that has received zero attention (except for this light) since we moved in. I hope that we will be working on this room this summer.

Important to note: There is only one more of those icky little brass lights left in the house...I think. We're picking them off one by one!!

P.S. Shout out to Britt@A Penny Saved who made her own schoolhouse light fixture for $9! Have you seen it? Amazing!!

Coming up...

If you are a fan of The Lettered Cottage (that should cover pretty much every blogger I know), you saw that I was the lucky duck New Year's Day winner of their True Value Giveaway. I won the hand-picked goodies in the photo at left.

My first project with them involves that fabulous wire frame. It has a home near that glorious antique gesso advertising mirror in the master bedroom makeover.

You'll get to see it in the next post!

Star Light, Star Bright, First Star...is My Kitchen Light

A
quick little change in the kitchen changed this builder's over-the-sink brass lighting nightmare....

into a dreamy night under the stars (well, at least one star)....

It casts a great glow and interesting pattern on the walls....

It even looks cool in the daytime...

It makes doing dishes a dream.

{pause}

Seriously.

{pause}

Okay, you know me too well. Totally kidding! Dishes...blech.

Contemporary Dining Table and Chairs

Interior design - Dining Table and Chairs

Dining Table
In context of modern dining room furniture, dining table is the item that finds mention in the very first instance. It is the place where the family members come together to have a meal in each others company. In modern dining rooms, the huge, wooden dining tables are replaced by more compact ones, usually with a glass-top. They are large enough to accommodate all the family members and small enough to help them feel closer to each other. The usual capacity of such dining tables is 4 to 6 people, though you might find larger ones too.

Dining Chairs
Chairs also form an important part of the modern dining room décor. Rather than wood, they now involve tubular metals and synthetic fibers, mainly because of the durability and lightweight of the latter. Even the design of chairs is now the usual straight-back type. Ergonomically designed cushion seats, which provide greater comfort, are the norm when it comes to modern dining room. The modern dining room chairs not only add to the overall appeal of the room, but also occupy much less space than the traditional ones.

Other Elements
Table and chairs comprise of the basic elements of a modern dining room. However, apart from them, there are certain other aspects that need to be taken into consideration. These include the storage cabinets, buffets and cupboards. The modern cabinets have several separate sections, for holding things like dinner plates, serving bowls, wine glasses and knives. Then, you have built-in cupboards and corner buffets.

Backgrounds are neutral or light, with strongly colored accessories and accents. Lighting is usually hidden and window treatments minimalist. Contemporary kitchens are the most common kitchen in the country today. Contemporary kitchens are warm and often considered the “second family room”. Many contemporary kitchens have Corian or laminate countertop and/or vinyl flooring as well as ample storage space with cabinets and a pantry. They are designed for the family-on-the-go and often times have a sizeable dining area right off of the cooking area.

Home wall decor is one of he many major elements in home interiors that decide the kind of mood, the space will finally create when it gets finished. The reason for this is quite obvious. Wall occupies a major visual field in the interiors of any building.

Wall decor can be carried out in every imaginable way, you can think of. However some of the most common ways to decorating a wall are.

1) Plastering and painting the wall

2) Applying a wallpaper on the wall

3) Cladding the wall with tiles

4) Keeping the wall exposed (exposed brick walls)

5) Keeping the wall without plastering

6) Creating a mural on the wall

Which type you want to go for, largely depends upon what end effect you want to create. It must be noted that every wall decor finish will have a major impact on the interior design theme of your home.

But how to really choose the best finish for wall decor?

To solve this problem you can think from different perspectives. Wall surfaces are vertical surfaces and help in two ways. The first and the most obvious function of a wall is to act as a divider between two rooms and create privacy.

Secondly walls help to reflect direct sunlight into deeper areas of the interior spaces creating an even lighting atmosphere. For this to happen it is necessary to finish the wall with the kind of decor that will help easy dispersion of light into internal areas.

Contemporary Living room decorating

In the past, living room or the parlor was the place with formal settings to welcome the honored guests. With times, it has evolved into a multifunctional room meant to welcome guests, sit and relax comfortably while reading a good book or watching TV, spend some time with the family, chat and gossip with friends and for entertainment. The most common furniture pieces found in the living room are sofas, love seat, sofa with chairs in different combinations, coffee table, end tables, ottomans, benches, shelves and perhaps a desk and bookshelves. If the living space is also used as a family room, you can also find TV and entertainment center in the room along with accessories, lighting, art and crafts on display and may be carpets.

Interior Living room decorating
An extra large living room may accommodate a piano, eating area complete with dining table, tennis or billiard table or even a number of plants, if your living space receives lots of direct sunlight. You may also shift am armoire to make use of the extra space for storage purposes. Living room can use maximum number of furnishings and it is a challenge to fit in all the desirable furnishings and accessories and coordinate them with carpeting, wall color, crown moldings, lighting style and window treatments among many other things. Usually, sofa or the entertainment center is the largest piece of furniture in a living room and since, placement of sofa will decide the view and focal point for the people seated in the living, room, use it as the starting point for living room decor.

The color gray brings to mind pebbles, stormy skies, and seagull’s wings. Indeed, soothing shades of gray are anything but boring. A patio design from the Paola Lenti Aqua Collection proves gray can be endlessly intriguing with stunning pieces of furniture that create a calming, earthy feel outdoors. Sofas from the Cove and Frame product lines look welcoming and shady in the midday sun. Soft textile floor coverings in different textures complement the natural aged gray of an old wooden floor, as well as a contemporary concrete floor. The whole theme accentuates the rustic beauty of the rough stone walls; they draw attention as the viewer begins to appreciate the subtle variety of hues and textures of each individual stone. Who would have thought gray could be so fascinating? A gorgeous grey patio style that grows better every time you look – with furniture and floor coverings by Paola Lenti.

Comtemporary Bathroom Design - Wood Sinks

The market is inundated with ceramic or stone versions of sinks. On the other hand, there are few wood sinks or basins on the market and often they never appear as options when shopping for bathroom furnishings. These pictures came from MGS Designs which offer the stainless steel faucets seen in the images. If you have any ideas about where the wood sinks came from, drop us a line here at Furniture Fashion. Happy Just Because Day!

I had to share my "Just Because" gift with you. You know that holiday...Just Because Day. That's okay...I hadn't heard of either...but I like it!! What a surprise I had this weekend when RJNJ showed up with this striped bag after a trip to "the big city" for an event.

Picture RJNJ and his buddy...in the mall (a rare feat in itself)...but actually shopping. That image alone makes me smile. When his buddy asked him what the gift was for,...
he answered, "Just because."
"Just because?" his buddy asked incredulously?
"That's right," responded RJNJ. "Just because."
That was the official beginning of Just Because Day.

RJNJ picked out this fabulous wristlet for me (Penelope Signature Wristlet...in silver and black...if anyone wants to know). Oddly enough, I've been trying to find a wristlet for a while. The funny part is that he didn't know anything about it. He certainly did not know what a wristlet was, but somehow he picked out THE perfect gift!!

This new scarf (Multi Button Ponytail Scarf) can be worn in the hair, around the neck, or to embellish a handbag. That's right...an accessory for an accessory. Necessary? No. But oh so beautiful!

The best part about Just Because Day is that it is totally unexpected! Who doesn't love to be surprised by the one you love? Thanks, RJNJ!!

Do you have a Just Because Day story? Do tell!!

American Railway Sign, Depot Chalkboard, & Gesso Advertising Mirror

I
t's been a while since I've shown you some junking finds. These were found last fall...from two of my favorite Minnesota occasional sale vendors!! The sand-casted American Railway sign, the depot chalkboard, and the gesso advertising mirror...each of these three pieces is too fabulous for words.

This sign dates between 1917 (when the American Railway Express was formed) and 1929 (when the company changed names). The sign is sand-painted. I'm not sure of the process, but it has a fabulous texture. The edges above and below the words are angled in, and the black and gold is very striking. I'm completely smitten with it!!

The warmth and patina of this chalkboard is yummy! I was told it was from some kind of depot in Fessenden, ND...train depot maybe? I don't remember what she said!! (UPDATE: I did a web search and learned that the Soo Line Depot in Fessenden closed in 1969. Perhaps it is from that depot!) The chalkboard part is an actual piece of slate. Heavy!!

Here are a couple close-ups of the gesso advertising mirror. It has a different advertiser on each side of the frame. The floral and textural details on this piece make it extra special.

The mirror has found a home in the master bedroom redo. I'll be sure to take some photos soon! The placement of the railway sign and chalkboard are still being debated. I haven't narrowed down the best options yet. They will find their way to the perfect spot eventually!
